I am not a confident rider, can I get help or training?

Yes, free Bespoke Cycle Training is available through ForwardMotion. If you want to learn how to build your confidence to ride in today’s traffic we can offer free, one-to-one cycle training with a qualified instructor, tailored to your individual needs. Who can apply?

To take part in the bike loan scheme, you must live in the south Essex area and be over 16 years old. If you are under 18 years old, you must have a parent or guardian sign the registration form as a guarantor. To be eligible for a discount on the cost of hiring a bike you must also be: a jobseeker, an apprentice, or a college, sixth form or university student. You will need to provide proof that you are either in receipt of jobseekers allowance, that you are on an approved apprenticeship scheme, or attend college, sixth form or university.

What are the priority groups?

The bike loan scheme is focused on supporting access to work, education or training opportunities. This is the reason we have a discount for jobseekers, apprentices, newly recruited employees and students. Whilst anyone living in south Essex is able to apply to loan a bike, during busy periods jobseekers, apprentices, newly recruited employees and students will be given priority and anyone else will be added to a waiting list.

How long can I rent a bike for?

You can choose to rent a bike for a period of between 1 and 6 months. You decide towards the end of each month if you want to continue renting the bike for a further month. The maximum rental period is 6 months. 

What is provided with the bikes?

All our bikes are fitted with mudguards, a luggage rack and good quality lock. You also have the option of renting a helmet, USB lights, pannier bags and hi -visibility vest. 


Do I have to collect the bike?

Bikes are delivered to your home or work address, provided it is within south Essex. We show you how the bike and equipment is operated and used, and set you up on the bike for optimal comfort. 

How do I pay for the rental?

You pay for your bike rental monthly in advance by credit card or direct debit. 

Do I have to pay a deposit?

No, a deposit is not required so that we keep the initial costs as low as possible for you. However you will be liable for the cost of repair or replacement of any parts damaged through misuse. 

What happens if the bike gets stolen or damaged?

Provided that you have locked the bike as we demonstrate to you, then the bikes are covered by our insurance. Otherwise, you are liable for the replacement cost of the bike and equipment. In any event you will need to contact the police and obtain a crime reference number from them.
